Government Computer News (GCN) annually recognizes the “best of breed” for technology excellence in public sector IT programs. This year, ten government IT projects were selected for their results-oriented drive; using technology to help their organizations achieve mission goals. The projects and their teams were honored at GCN’s 27th Annual Awards Gala at the Ritz Carlton, Tyson’s Corner on October 14, 2014. TWD staff and guests were there to celebrate the winners’ accomplishments along with nearly 500 other government and industry leaders.

One project in particular had special meaning for the TWD team: the relocation of Naval Sea Systems Command offices in the aftermath of the 2013 Navy Yard shootings. The Navy Yard tragedy provided an unimaginable challenge to the employees in building 197 and across the agency, including many TWD employees. NAVSEA was left in relative disarray after September 16, with no office to attend and no technical capabilities to leverage. NAVSEA leadership set a goal to get every employee equipped to go back to work before December 25 – a goal that the OCIO team worked tirelessly to meet and exceed. With the team’s constant dedication to the project, they met the goal and had a sufficient infrastructure in place to allow the NAVSEA staff to get back to work only a month after the incident.

Thousands of men and women across government and the private sector work tirelessly every day to help the government fulfill its obligations through the use of innovation and technology. It was an honor to be part of the celebration to recognize these representatives of the best and brightest.
